Sometimes starting something new can be more than a little confusing..
..It seems like those that have got to where you want to be have discovered some special secret way to getting where you want to go!
well let me let you in a little secret..

There are no secrets.
"What you mean?" I hear you ask "am I reading this for nothing?" not at all, bear with me.
A secret is only knowledge that you don't know - the reason why it becomes a secret is "supposedly" only a few people "know it" and may try to hide it...
Well when it comes to learning to play guitar secrets this my friends really is a load of bunkum... the secrets to playing guitar are available to any one with the passion and willingness to expend some effort!
Did you pay close attention to what i just said?
Passion and Effort – (hint-hint!)
ooooh did I just drop a secret around here somewhere?
You see the profound and the powerful are not hidden somewhere in a dusty cave.. it's right in front of your and my eyes!
Do you look up to a certain Guitar God? or a composer or.. ..or anyone?
How do you think they got there?
This is not a rhetorical question? I mean it how do you think they got there?
Or much more importantly.. don't think know.
How did they get there?
Find out! There will be all sorts of interesting information out there (especially if they are famous), do Google searches, check youtube, go to your local book store and check if there are any biographies available..
Does that seem like a load of work to you?
Remember those 2 words passion and effort.
I bet you this, none of your heroes got good at what they do without passion and effort.
Sure there will have been other factors involved - guaranteed!
But take those two factors out and - no more hero!
Does it still sound like hard work?
Here's another "secret"!
The more passionate you are about something the easier the effort seems!
And the more effort you put into your passions the more passionate you become.

Once you find out how your heros did it.. let them inspire you. Try to do what they did, but make sure it's right for you.
For example: If your favourite Guitar God was Kurt Cobain - take what you love of his guitar playing and composition, his choice of musical keys and chord structures, his lyrical insights - but don't think that taking a mass of hard drugs, getting messed up with someone like Courtney Love and shooting your self is the way to go!
What do you love about your guitar hero's work? Get the guitar tabs, watch the performances, discover the techniques, and then put your own spin on it
- make it your own!
This is what it means to be right for you. Elvis and the early rockers took elements of Gospel and blues and made it their own and out popped ROCK BABY!
So in summary; copy your hero's, be inspired by your hero's but then do your own thing! it will feel better and work better because it will be natural!

But in a quick summary
Do theory books put you to sleep but video lessons inspire you? Then get stuck into a an online or dvd guitar course that has video lessons!
Do you prefer to just listen to the music and then try to copy it? then you will probably learn most by ear.
Do you need interaction with other people to learn? Then you may need to get private classes..
If you love the idea of how music comes alive from the page and how the patterns leap out at you, then music theory and guitar tabs are your cuppa tea!
It doesn't matter if your friend down the road says that the only way to shred is listening to megadeath 11hrs a day - it won't work if it's not for you.
Don't Give Up!
Even if you're passionate about learning the guitar but are finding it really hard, don't give up!
Try another way of learning and remember the "secrets"
You need to be passionate and put in the effort, find inspiration from your heroes, and do what's right for you!
You see? There are no secrets to learning to play the guitar are there!?
