How To Know If You Can Become A Great Guitarist Part 1: How Bad Do You Want It?

By T. Hess

What is the one thing that will stop you from becoming a better guitarist? You’d be mistaken if you thought it was a lack of talent, not enough guitar speed, not having knowledge of music theory or countless other musical factors. Truth is, anyone can learn how to play guitar well… the actual issue, is that most people are not dedicated enough to doing whatever needs to be done to reach their goals.

Think about all the tasks you must get done to become a great guitarist as a mountain you must climb. Right now, you are either at the bottom or somewhere in the middle, and you want to be at the top. As you scan up the side of the mountain, it can feel intimidating. BUT one thing is for sure, you will never get to the top by only focusing on how tall the mountain is… instead, you’ll need to see the ascent as a series of steps. You need to:

1. Understand all the steps that take you closer to your biggest musical goals.

2. Take one step at a time until you have ascended to the summit of the mountain

To do this and become a great guitarist, you must answer this question:

Do You Want It Bad Enough?

Understanding the correct steps to take, and taking action to complete those steps one after the other will get you started… but to achieve musical greatness, you have to WANT IT bad enough. What does this mean? Well, it does NOT mean practicing a lot of hours every day (so even if you cannot practice guitar all day, you certainly still become a great player).

Simply put, wanting it bad enough means choosing what really matters – doing the things you know will help you reach your goals and NOT making excuses for why you believe you can’t do them. You must invest your free time into making better choices for your playing. So whenever your friends go out to party, you need to be at home putting in work to reach your musical dreams!

Change Your Guitar Practice Mindset From “I’d Like To” To “I AM”

The majority of guitar players do not become great because they invest most of their time thinking about what they’d like to do rather than actually doing it. This is a basic symptom of NOT wanting it “bad enough” to achieve greatness. Have you ever found yourself saying the following:

-I’d like to understand how to practice guitar more effectively to achieve my goals, but I don’t have a lot of time

-I’d like to get up half an hour earlier in the morning to practice guitar, but it’s really difficult

-I’d like to learn from the world’s best guitar instructor, but I don’t have enough money

-I’d like to be trained by the top guitar trainer, but I don’t have enough time, or I’m afraid of looking stupid

-I’d like to have better guitar practice discipline, but it’s hard to focus

-I’d like to become a great guitarist, but I don’t know if it’s realistic

It’s clear that actually DOING all these things is going to massively speed up your progress towards achieving your guitar playing goals.

Whenever you think to yourself “I’d like” to do something rather than actually DOING it (or taking action of some kind), you are keeping the door open for excuses to control your mindset. With this approach, you will over time allow mediocrity to infect your guitar playing and your progress will stall. It’s been said that: “Those who want something, find a way… those who don’t, find an excuse.” Excuses are the DEATH of your musical goals!

Good news is, it is very easy to get on the right track. It all begins with simply imagining how your guitar playing would change if you replaced the “I’d like” part in the sentences above with “I AM”. Say the sentences below (yes, speak them OUT LOUD… if you don’t, you won’t get anything out of this):

-I am learning how to practice guitar in a highly effective manner

-I am getting up early every morning to work towards achieving mastery in my guitar playing

-I am being trained by the best guitar teacher, coach and trainer

-I am focused and disciplined

-I am becoming the incredible guitarist that I am destined to become

-I am in control of my own destiny

… now, imagine how different your guitar playing would be if all the sentences you read above were really true. Think about how much more progress you’ be making and how much more you would love the process of achieving your goals if you could truly say “Yes” to the statements above. Take a minute and really imagine that…

Now, guess what: these statements CAN be 100% true for you. It all begins with:

Choosing What Matters

To bridge the gap between “I’d like to” and “I AM” you must say: “I CHOOSE… ” – Becoming a great guitarist is a choice. As I discussed above, determining the right things to practice is not too difficult (The big difference between so-so guitarists and excellent guitarists is the latter choose to become that way. This all comes from wanting it bad enough when it comes to reaching their goals. Rather than allowing excuses to control your life, CHOOSE a better path for yourself.

To do this, eliminate all your excuses for NOT doing something by replacing them with a reason TO do it. It’s simple. Complete the following exercise: read the following statements out loud, and this time complete the part that comes after the word “because” with your own personal reason.

– I CHOOSE to learn how to practice guitar in a highly effective manner, because…

– I CHOOSE to up early every morning to work towards achieving mastery in my guitar playing, because…

– I CHOOSE to be trained by the best guitar teacher, coach and trainer, because…

– I CHOOSE to be focused and disciplined, because…

– I CHOOSE to become the incredible guitarist that I am destined to become, because…

– I CHOOSE to be in control of my own destiny, because…

Once you replace “excuses” with “big enough reasons” that you want to achieve badly enough, everything becomes very easy. Your reasons are the thing that drives your choices and forces you to take actions to accomplish incredible things. So whenever all your friends are playing around on guitar, playing the same licks (instead of TRULY practicing), sleeping more than they should or watching YouTube videos, you will be the one taking a single action, one step at a time, to achieve your dreams and become the great guitarist that you deserve to be!

Success Breeds Success

While a bad enough desire will make you become a great guitarist, you grow true long-term motivation for practice as a result of one positive action compounding onto another. As well as focusing on your greatest musical goals, focus on the feeling of accomplishment you receive after completing even a small step towards your guitar playing greatness. Whether you just finished several hours of heavy guitar practice or merely woke up early to MAKE time for 45 minutes of guitar practice before going to work – this will provide you with the motivation required to keep going again tomorrow and the next day… As you do this every day, these actions will build upon each other to change you into the great guitarist you always dreamed of becoming. Focus on how good each step along the journey makes you feel and you will become highly motivated to achieve this feeling all the time.

So, do you want to transform yourself into a great guitarist bad enough? Or are you like the majority of people who only “sort of” want it (but never do it)? Don’t be like most people and allow mediocrity into your playing – you deserve much more than that!

Starting down the road to becoming a killer guitarist is simultaneously the most difficult and most easy part… Begin by doing something in this moment in order to gain a victory for yourself right now. Take a huge action and blaze your path to greatness!
